STAIRFALL

October 29, 2024 - January 22, 2025

Adam Rowe

Tri-Star Arts is pleased to present the next exhibition in their Golden Chain Gallery project space located at the historic Candoro Marble Building. Stairfall by Adam Rowe (Knoxville, TN) opens Tuesday, October 29, 2024 and will run through Wednesday, January 29, 2025. This show is located within the unique architectural space of a narrow wooden stairwell.

An opening reception will be held on Friday, November 1, 2024 from 5:00 until 8:00 pm (artist in attendance). The address is 4450 Candora Avenue, Knoxville, TN 37920 and admission is always free of charge.

Adam Rowe states about his practice, “Making a new artwork begins with a question I don’t immediately know the answer to. It ends with the artwork as the proof that the answer I came up with is true. The middle part, figuring it out, is often more time consuming than shaping the actual piece, although it is the part I enjoy the most. After studying graphic design and working in the field for several years, my desire to apply the principles of design to fine art forms and media has steadily increased. Most of my work falls in the category of “math art,” although I would never claim to know much math.”

Rowe says concerning the Stairfall exhibition, "The usual method for descending a staircase is one step at a time. Occasionally, one might get in a hurry and skip a step or two, especially at the end. The most daring approach is to jump straight to the bottom, making a flight of stairs really live up to its name. These are not the only choices. There are many others. In this particular case, there are ten stairs. Allowing only downward movement and the freedom to skip any number of steps, the piece of art on each stair tread indicates the following: the number of future choice possibilities vs. the number of declined paths; a color-coded guide for jumping to another step; your current position on a map of choices; and the final velocity your body will be traveling at the moment of landing. Stairfall can be used as a guide for planning a trip down the stairs. Even better, it can be used to visualize all possible trips down the stairs. Since tripping or really even jumping down stairs is not always safe, sometimes it’s nice to see how much complexity there can be in something routine. Stairfall consists of a set of eleven pieces designed for the Candoro Marble Building staircase. The panel’s media include cut paper, graphite, and ink.”
